Hum is pleased to announce that the American Society for Microbiology (ASM) will begin piloting Hum’s new AI-based editorial assistant, Alchemist Review, as part of an evaluation to assess how AI tools can benefit the editorial review process.
ASM will use Alchemist Review’s comprehensive textual analysis capabilities alongside Grounded's contextual citation verification to deliver intelligent manuscript evaluations to editorial teams on two of their journals as part of the pilot. This evaluation will explore how AI can deepen manuscript analysis, alleviate editorial workload, and streamline the editorial review workflow while maintaining human oversight and decision-making authority.
As part of a human-led editorial review process, Alchemist Review employs frontier AI technologies to identify and extract critical manuscript elements including primary claims, key methodologies, and asserted research significance. It also assesses every reference and related citation for correctness, retractions and contextual relevance. These insights will support ASM's editors in making faster, better-informed decisions while minimizing administrative tasks.
This collaboration will seamlessly integrate with ASM's existing editorial infrastructure through a custom workflow developed in partnership with ChronosHub, ensuring manuscript data flows efficiently between systems while maintaining security and editorial control.
"ASM's commitment to scientific excellence and their willingness to embrace innovation makes theman ideal partner for Hum,”said Dustin Smith, Co-founder and President of Hum. “We’re excited to work with them to add efficiencies to their editorial experience, and to learn from them and their editorial teams.”
Like many publishers, ASM has seen a dramatic increase in submissions to their 16 journals. ASM's pilot will focus on evaluating how implementing Alchemist Review's advanced AI capabilities to automatically extract key manuscript insights, including central claims; methodology assessment; citation validation; and evaluating research originality. These features will support ASM’s editors to make more informed decisions, leading to enhanced productivity.
"We're excited to explore how AI can enhance our editorial processes while we maintain the rigorous standards ASM journals are known for,” said David Haber, Director of Journal Publishing Operations for ASM. “This pilot represents an exciting opportunity to test and develop cutting-edge AI tools that may transform how we evaluate and process manuscripts, while ensuring our editorial teams remain at the center of all decision-making."
