Hum is pleased to announce that IOP Publishing is exploring broader use of Hum’s AI-based editorial assistant, Alchemist Review.

IOP Publishing helped shape the initial development of Alchemist Review and its responsible approach to augmenting in-house editorial processes. The new agreement continues this work, driving further expansion of features and applications whilst expanding the coverage to the majority of IOP Publishing’s proprietary journal portfolio.

Alchemist Review grew out of a collaborative project with IOP Publishing who, along with their Purpose Led Publishing partners, helped develop an AI powered editorial assistant alongside Hum and Grounded AI. The collaboration explored how AI can support early-stage manuscript assessment, reduce administrative complexity, and provide clearer, faster pathways from submission to decision.

“Efficiency is vital in editorial work, and providing our in-house editors with tools that streamline their processes helps them focus on what matters most,” said Miriam Maus, Chief Publishing Officer at IOP Publishing. “Working with Hum on the development of Alchemist Review allows us to explore how best to apply the promise of AI to enable our teams to surface key insights earlier and dedicate more time to meaningful decision-making, while maintaining the scientific rigour and integrity our researchers expect.”

“We’re thrilled to continue our collaboration with IOP Publishing which includes the expansion of Alchemist Review across a wider range of their portfolio. As part of this expansion they will also be adding their expert input as we roll out a number of new features throughout 2026. This input is invaluable in our drive to apply AI to solve real editorial challenges in a constructive and safe manner,” said Dustin Smith, co-founder and CEO of Hum.
